Response to Intervention (RTI) in Early Childhood Settings
The current focus of RTI in most states and across most districts is with school-aged children. There is, however, growing awareness that some of these RTI approaches can and should be applied to younger children, in early childhood settings.
RTI is a collaborative initiative focused on meeting the needs of ALL children. RTI in early childhood settings can provide comprehensive supports and services for children with a systemic approach to:
- Quality practices
- Ensuring all children are making progress and achieving outcomes
- Collaborative problem solving/reflective practices
- Evidences based practices
- Ongoing progress monitoring/Data based decision making
- Assessing all children/curriculum embedded assessment
We are just beginning to learn about promising practices of RTI that can support children in their early years. In OHIO we are supported by several documents that support a systematic program approach to quality early childhood practices including:
- Early Learning Program Guidelines
- Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards
- IMPACT (Integrated Monitoring and Process and Continuous Improvement Tool).
